What is the best way to take care of my spoon or bowl
The short answer is, it all depends. It simply depends on how you are using them. If a bowl is used frequently for salads than holding fruit, then more care will be needed.
Woodenware items treated with food-safe oils will not only enhance appearances but will minimize food juices and other liquids and food juices from being absorbed.
Linseed and flax seed oils work well. DO NOT purchase hardware store “Boiled Linseed Oil” as it is NOT truly boiled and because additional harmful ingredients have been added. LOOK for and purchase ONLY products labeled "flax seed oil" as they are used for food-grade oil that is sold in health food stores as an edible product. For long-term protection use flax seed oils, as opposed to olive and mineral oils will penetrate wood fibers and then will polymerize, or cure, the wood. Other oils, which provide long-term protection of woodenware items are walnut, hemp seed, and grape seed.
The bowls and spoons that I offer are typically finished with flax seed oil and/or a flax seed oil and beeswax mixture.
Guidelines for care
Heat
The curing of woodenware by flax and walnut oils are accelerated by heat. The easiest approaches are by placing them in the sun. Any excess oil should be gently wiped off.
What is the best types of wax to use
DO NOT us any furniture wax products on any woodenware products used to prepare or serve food.
If it’s the appearance of sheen you want, then consider a beeswax/oil blend product, which is food safe.
